Five Golf Etiquette Rules Every Beginner Should Know

September 3, 2026 Golf Sana Team

Golf is one of the few sports where good manners matter as much as good technique. New players often worry more about their swing than the small courtesies that make a round enjoyable for everyone, but a little etiquette goes a long way. Here are five habits worth building from your very first day on the course.

1. Respect the pace of play

Golf moves in groups, and every group behind you is waiting. Be ready to play when it is your turn, keep your pre-shot routine simple, and if you are searching for a lost ball, wave the group behind you through after a few minutes. Nobody expects a beginner to play fast, but everybody appreciates a beginner who is aware of the group behind them.

2. Repair your divots and ball marks

Every shot you take on the fairway or green leaves a small mark. Fixing your divots (the patch of grass your club displaces) and repairing ball marks on the green takes seconds, and it keeps the course in good shape for the next group. Most golf shops sell a small divot tool for a few thousand shillings. It is one of the best investments you can make.

3. Stay quiet and still when others are playing

A golf swing takes real concentration. When someone in your group is about to hit, stand still, stay out of their sightline, and keep conversation for between shots. This is one of the quickest ways to be welcomed by more experienced players.

4. Know where to stand on the green

Never stand in another player's line to the hole, and try not to cast a shadow across their putting line either. If you are not sure where to stand, ask. Experienced players are usually happy to show you.

5. Take care of the course

Rake bunkers after you play from them, keep golf carts off wet areas, and avoid taking practice swings that tear up the turf. The course is shared by everyone who plays after you.

None of this is complicated, and nobody expects perfection from a beginner. What matters is that you are learning and being considerate of the people around you. That is exactly the spirit Golf Sana was built on: a welcoming place to learn the game properly, etiquette included.
